The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
