The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
